CJAY GRiZ
Christian-John Monias, aka CJAY GRiZ is a singer-songwriter, performer and music producer.
CJAY began experimenting with music production and writing during his early teens. In 2014 he had the opportunity to work with the pilot program, N’we Jinan. Through this placement, he was employed by the organization to share his skills in songwriting and beat making. In 2019 he started releasing music as an artist and using the name CJAY GRiZ. Since then he’s released 2 collaborative EPs and plenty of features and singles.
As a music producer, CJAY has produced three number 1 singles for Treaty 6 recording artist Melody McArthur. The first single ‘Unceded’ was produced with the help of Paulstar of Meikin Records, and was also the first release for Melody’s 4th EP ‘Kizmet’. In 2023, CJAY went on to produce a majority of Melody’s 5th album ‘Embers’. Two singles, ‘Twin Flame’ and ‘Fires All Over Town’ both went on to reach number 1 on SiriusXM’s Indigenous Music Countdown. CJAY has produced for artists such as Claire Sully, KONG, Violent Ground, SLICE, Hyper-T and many more.
Recently, CJAY GRiZ went on to share the prize for Producer of The Year at the International Indigenous Hip Hop Awards Show 2023 in Vancouver with EarthChild for their song ‘Live For The Moment’. CJAY was not present but the award was accepted by EarthChild.
CJAY’s productions have featured in TV such as APTN’s Warrior’s Up series.
His influences for music production are Timbaland, Kanye West, Scott Storch, NAV, Metroboomin and Nick Mira. CJAY’s music production styles range from dark trap and drill, to moody and melodically drowning R&B to vibe-y and upbeat pop tunes. As a performer and lyricist, CJAY tends to write about his upbringing, family struggles and lifestyle in the reserve.

CJAY GRiZ has collaborated with artists from all around Turtle Island. In 2021 he released his collaborative EP titled ‘Indian Time’ with Wet’set artist EarthChild. The 6 songs were both recorded, produced and written by the 2 artists. CJAY GRiZ also released another collab EP titled ‘Eight One Nine’ with close friend and collaborator Vizible. Other collaborations include a song and music video with rising star Mattmac, productions and features with Inuk artist Hyper-T, Naskapi duo Violent Ground and Winnipeg based artist Geronimo (Malcolm Roulette).
